Biography

Pipi Tustian’s love for fabric, texture, pattern and colour began at a young age, influenced by her creative seamstress mother and their trips to Winnipeg’s downtown textile district. The sight of floor-to-ceiling bolts of fabric was like a candy store for her, leaving a lasting impression on her young spirit.

Born to immigrant parents who had to start over after war, Pipi’s family didn’t have much, but they never felt a sense of lack. They embraced up-cycling and recreating furniture, fabrics and clothing with creative flair. This self-taught approach to creating something from nothing became a source of enjoyment and a means to meet their needs.

Throughout the years, Pipi has explored various artistic mediums, but her true passion lies in paint and fabric. Everyday life and the natural world inspire her work, whether it’s the interplay of colour and pattern in a flower garden, the emotions evoked by a song,or the imagery sparked by a story. Pipi finds solace in creating bold conversations through her use of flora and fauna patterns and vibrant colours.

Pipi’s creative journey began by showcasing her hand painted work in the wholesale gift show marketplace. In 1999, she won the Uniquely B.C. Overall Best Booth Award. This marked the start of her relationship with retail sales, as her work found its way into numerous stores and galleries across Canada.

creating with her hands has always been a deeply fulfilling and meditative practice for Pipi, serving as a form of self-care. This led her to develop a workshop series, providing others with the opportunity to find joy in everyday art. Pipi finds great fulfillment in sharing her passion and creating a safe space for others to discover their own happiness through art.
